A wandering minstrel for the digital age, Orla Wren is a
multi-media artist who travels around Scotland in his van
selling photographs, making music and ridding ungrateful towns
of rats... Or something. Obsessed with the minutiae of nature,
his macro photography makes a good counterpoint to the music
on debut album 'Butterfly Wings Make' - with Wren obsessing
over the pinprick digital machinations and traditional
instrumentation that make up the album in a similar fashion to
that of Murcof. Very much an organic electronica album that
takes IDM as its starting point, Wren nonetheless manages to
coax something new from the wires - with album opener
'Closure' a blossom scented track that unfurls its various
strands (chittering digitalis, sweeping strings, sweet
percussion) to epic effect. Elsewhere, 'Fawn' is a cascade of
machine ticks and harp, 'Sea Grass' is an optimistic coalition
of guitar and sugar-soaked soundscapes, whilst 'Ballad Of A
Daydream' etches a tender piano line onto a fizzing cowl of
electronics. Butterfly effect!
