Simply one of the most gorgeous collections of modern folk pop
songs i've heard in some time, this is best compared to Sufjan
Stevens or a cheekier Jose Gonzalez, but there is so much soul
squeezed into these tracks it's hard to give it solid
comparisons. The instrumentation is typically ambitious; I can
hear glockenspiel, dulcimer, xylophone, horns and possibly
even a harp accompanying the usual acoustic guitars and MannÆs
beautiful voice. It is this sort of scope that makes me think
again of Sufjan, who also manages to pack as many instruments
as he can fit in his car boot onto his albums. Yet the use of
instruments with Grand Salvo also hints at genre hopping with
flecks of jazz, post rock and classical elements invading the
folk pop at times to great effect. Grand Salvo may be a fresh
name to some but without a doubt this is an incredibly
charming record - one worth investigating without delay.
Highly Recommended.
