Release Notes:
With a transatlantic friendship built on mutual respect, musical
influences and shared punk values, uniting Jonah and Frank
for this 12" project made perfect sense. They've both spent
time, for better and for worse, in critically-acclaimed rock bands
(Jonah with far, Onelinedrawing, New End Original, & Gratitude
and Frank with Million Dead), sold over 100,000 records
between them and have ended up solo as a result. Go figure.
These days, on nearly opposite sides of the globe, Frank and
Jonah partake in similar punk rituals. They travel to shows in
compact cars and get on stage every night and stand there
alone (Jonah sometimes enlists the help of some quirky casio
beats and an iPod), guitars in hand, pouring their insides out
through their mouths and fingertips. Oh, and both love Billy
Bragg.
In addition to attracting the attention of their loyal fans, the most
recent releases from both artists were well-received by both indie
and major press. JonahÆs live CD/DVD set titled ThereÆs A Lot in
Here (Equal Vision Records) prompted Entertainment Weekly to
describe him ôas one of rock's most charismatic, tuneful, purist
geeksö and renowned website Punkbands.com echoed the
sentiment dubbing him, ôone of the most human and accessible
people in rock today.ö Most recently, Jonah can be seen and
heard on Fort Minor's hit single "Where'd You Go?" with Mike
Shinoda of Linkin Park and singer Holly Brook. The track won a
moonman at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards for Ringtone of
the Year.
Frank TurnerÆs first release as a solo artist, Campfire Punkrock
(Xtra Mile Recordings) hit stores in May 2006, sold through its
first pressing in one week and received the coveted 4 KÆs from
European rock magazine Kerrang. If that wasnÆt enough,
Rocksound reviewed the country and folk-tinged CD and
prophecized that, ôNext year, he'll be an established solo artist in
his own right, just wait and see.ö We agree wholeheartedly.
On this release, Jonah and Frank pay homage to the songwriting
tradition in which they follow and each borrow from the rich
repertoire of songs that artists in the States and the UK have
constructed over the past 100 years. Jonah does veracious
renditions of All I Want by UK songwriter Babybird and Billy
Bragg's A New England while Frank reinvented the American
classic You Are My Sunshine and the Lemonheads' The Outdoor
Type.
The split 12ö marks the first release of new material from Jonah
Matranga since he shed the Onelinedrawing moniker and is
FrankÆs first release that is available outside of the UK. Touring
from both is always ongoing as Jonah just completed a trip to
Europe and will be spending the rest of the summer and fall
traveling the U.S. and Australia and Frank is in the midst of a
whirlwind European tour that will run through August.
