THE WAY YOU SHINE marks the first ever release from The Shimmers, a Philadelphia
folk rock supergroup featuring Dave Bielanko of Marah, Eden Daniels & Chris
Unrath of Baby Flamehead, Andrew Chalfen of The Trolleyvox, and Jonathan Segel
of Camper Van Beethoven. David and Eden formed The Shimmers in the fall of 1995
as an outlet for their collaborative compositions.
The songs were recorded over the summer of 1997 but shelved for future mixing
after the breakup of Daniels and Bielanko. In 2004 Chris Unrath moved his
Eadrumland Studio and came across the by now forgotten master tapes of The
ShimmersÆ studio recordings. He circulated rough mixes of most of the songs that
make up ôThe Way You Shineö and Jonathan Segel posted them on his private
website for friends to hear. The positive reactions to these beautiful songs led
to the decision to finish and release the album. Over the ensuing months, new
songs were recorded and extra instrumentation was added to others before final
mixing. The result is the engaging Americana-tinged folk-rock record that is THE
WAY YOU SHINE.
ôThe Letterö: sounds like Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard went on a double date
with Tom Waits and Tim Burton. They wrote this song over coffee & cigarettes.
ItÆs about realizing you canÆt change what youÆve done and mistakes are part of
lifeà. sometimes the most enriching part. Beautifully mournful duet vocals over
lush & hypnotic layered instrumentation.
ôYou Want Moreö: when we are brutally honest with ourselves we realize we are
always only inches from a broken heart. But even in pain thereÆs hope. Daniels
delivers a sweet rich melody over BielankoÆs honest and sparing guitar with a
gorgeous violin overlay by Jonathan Segel.
ôJesus Is My Friendö: not a spiritual but about looking at pre-packaged
spirituality and finding it hollow. Whatever you believe, the essence of any
salvation comes from within. The song draws you in and pulls you on with what
has become a ShimmersÆ trademark: honest narrative lyrics, unexpected &
unforgettable melody, and fluid interlocking acoustic and electric guitar riffs.
