Yes, the rumours are true, everyoneÆs favourite cuddly veteran
of Japanese noise Merzbow has made a dub reggae album. Well, I
might be exaggerating slightly but this is about as close as
heÆll ever get, a collaboration with friend of Zorn and classic
jazzer Jamie Saft which sees dub rhythms and structures kicked
around a torture chamber and covered in pain by our man Masami
Akita. Well for one thing IÆm happy thereÆs not an animal on the
front for one (come on itÆs getting a bit tiresome nowà) and
comical concept aside this is a surprisingly engaging listen.
Akita devastates most of the record with his marginally tempered
noise only occasionally leaving breathing space for SaftÆs dub
rhythms, yet with a track called æSkinning JLOÆ û whatÆs not to
love? IÆve gathered that noisy excessive mayhem probably isnÆt
everyoneÆs cup of tea, but if youÆre looking for some West
Indian flavour with your distortion youÆd better grab this
before it becomes nothing but a discogs entry and a distant
memory.
