Within the last 20 years, the name Wes " Maestro" Williams
has been one of the most important ones in Canadian Pop
culture. Since the release of his first disc in 1989,the
climate for Black Music in Canada has changed forever.
Because of his magnitude and sphere of influence, the Juno
Awards had to implement a Rap Category in 1991 where he
was nominated for 5 awards including Vocalist of the Year.
Maestro Fresh Wes walked away with 2 awards including Best
Video for his single "Drop The Needle" and one for Best
Rap Recording for his first album " Symphony In Effect".
His single "Let Your Backbone Slide" is still the only
song from a Canadian Hip Hop artist to go Gold. His first
album has not been exceeded in sales nor importance.
He has released 5 albums, received numerous awards
including a Harry Jerome Award from the Black Business and
Professionals Association,4 Much Music Awards. 2 People's
Choice Awards,2 Toronto Music Awards, the first Platinum
Album from a Hip Hop Artist in Canada, a Special
Acheivement and Pioneer Award from UMAC and a TrailBlazer
Award from Toronto's Reel World Film Festival.
In 1998 Maestro started to diversify his talents into the
arena of Film and TV. In 2003 he landed featured and guest
lead roles in six projects which include a role in "Honey"
(Universal Films), an episode of SOUL FOOD and a role in
"Redemption" (FOX Television) starring Jamie Foxx as
Stanley "Tookey" Williams and Lynn Whitfield as Babara
Becnal. Maestro played Tony Bogard in this real life story
about the founder of The Crip Gang who is now on death
row.
Always continuing to grow , Maestro has expanded in
different areas including his own clothing line called
"Dope State Classics" which is starting to brand itself in
the Skateboard and Snowboard culture. He plans on having
his brand expand internationally as well and "Dope State
Classics" has it's own Skateboard and Snowboard teams.
The name Maestro stands for 3 things which are Longevity,
Perseverance and Canadian Heritage. For over a decade and
a half Wes Williams has been doing nothing else but
showing us that.
