British rock act Clinic will release its fourth
album, "Visitations," Oct. 10 via Domino. The
follow-up to 2004's "Winchester Cathedral" was
recorded in roughly a month's time at the band's
newly constructed studio in its Liverpool
hometown.
"Compared to 'Winchester Cathedral,' its a lot
more direct and more upbeat," lead singer Ade
Blackburn tells Billboard.com. "We think of it as
more of a proggy sounding album. A lot of it was
more designed to play live, rather than relying on
the studio more."
The set was previewed earlier this year with the
track "Tusk," which Clinic posted on its Web site.
"The thinking behind it was, 'Tusk' is a raw punk
song, like one we'd imagine on old punk seven
inches. Why not give it away free," Blackburn says
with a laugh.
According to Blackburn, "Visitations" finds Clinic
shifting its direction in song content as well as
sound. "On previous albums, its been exploring
darker sides of behavior," he says. "This one goes
beyond that and focuses on seeing simplicity,
accepting other people for what they are, rather
than over analyzing people."
Musically, the band tested out harpsichords and
flutes as well as "primitive electronics" and
percussion, according to Blackburn. "It really
balanced the guitars out, so it's not such a
'rock' sound," he says.
