The process of describing movement has troubled the thinking man
for centuries. It is a process that is both natural and foreign
at the same time. It occurs socially and occurs naturally. What
causes us to move?
It begins with what looks like an empty canvas. It is a place of
promise, hope, and a new beginning, or so they heard. We are all
born into a situation that could be improved in some
way, shape, or form. One day it becomes too much, and the
promise and allure of what lies beyond becomes too much and the
movement slowly begins. The process of Migration takes hold. In
nature, it is done out of necessity. It is the search for food,
a warm place to spend a cold season, or simply a way to elude
predators. For us, it begins with a glimmer of hope, an image of
a dream, and a shift towards something new.
Once Migration begins it is hard to stop. Everyday traditions
and practices become tired and uninspiring. The mind becomes
consumed with comparisons of our current situation and the
potential for new life that lies abroad. OneÆs identity becomes
neutral, the only goal being to get
somewhere else.
Migration isnÆt always a process that begins voluntarily. OneÆs
image of hope and promise and another?s worst nightmare can
exist in the same land. Oppression, violation, and injustice can
live on the same block as dreams and hope and never be aware of
it.
Despite the circumstances of the Migration, both begin with an
unsure journey to another world. All worldly possessions are
sold, left behind, or taken away and we are left to travel with
nothing but the clothes on our back, the spirit in our minds,
and the rhythms and traditions of memories given to us by the
place we are leaving. We are overcome with uneasiness as the
boat sways from side to side in a dark abyss of nothing. There
are times during the journey when we wonder if we are making the
right decision, we hate the ones forcing us from our homes, we
embrace fond memories of what we left behind.
At daybreak comes the sight of a new world. Many different
voices around you say the same thing differently, this is now
our home. For some this will spell the beginning of a new life
of promise, for others it is the beginning of a journey into
forced labor, discrimination, and heartbreak. The footstep from
boat deck to solid ground is the transition. The unconscious
movement of history, both national and personal, that will
change the world of those
to come is starting.
Years pass and life may improve, it may be the same as the place
you left behind, or it may get worse. It is under these dire
circumstances that the unmistakable work ethic of our ancestors
is forged. They woke up early, worked their fingers to the bone,
got kicked, spit on, yelled at, insulted, and beaten down under
the sole motivation that we may someday have a life better than
theirs.
And at every turn there is an opportunity to shed your old
identity. You dip your foot into the melting pot only to feel
the bubbles of assimilation tickle your sole. To wash old
memories away completely is to rob your future ancestors of a
sense of history, tradition and practice.
Contained within this album are hundreds of years worth of
rhythm, language, and tradition. Drums and guitars forged in the
hills of Malesise intertwined with the electronic syncopation of
Detroit. The end result is both the vision of a man leaving
Malesia and a man arriving in Detroit.
Little in life in accomplished alone. The greatest individuals
in life have always received advice and guidance from others.
Music at all levels in Detroit has existed because experienced
artists have passed the knowledge of their craft on to the next
generation of producers, bands, and MCÆs. This album exists
today based on timeless knowledge and skill bestowed upon the
artist by the minds of Submerge. Under the tutelage of artists
such as Mike Banks, Ade Manior and Electrofunk, and Gerald
Mitchell through Los Hermanos, Franki Juncaj was encouraged to
forge a new sound for Detroit while retaining the sounds and
rhythms given to him by his family and their native land.
Through their selfless teachings these artists have themselves
unwittingly ensured the survival of electronic music in Detroit
and beyond.
The life of electronic music depends on the passing on of skills
and techniques from one generation of artists to another, much
like the passing of tradition from the immigrant parents to
their children.
As in life, the essence of the future of this music depends on
its past.
