defining moments in the history of house music!
originally released in 1996 and featuring productions from danny
tenaglia, blaze, 'little' louie vega, mood ii swing, terence
parker, moodyman, & romanthony; phil asher presents headphone
house showcases a wealth of talent in the early productions of
these now legendary producers.
compiled by phil asher - 'phil asher presents headphone house' has
been repackaged for today's market and using phil's great
knowledge of house music highlights a number of hard to find
tracks from today's biggest producers. famed for his inspiration
information residency at london's notting hill arts club, phil is
world renowned as a tastemaking dj / producer, he has recently
completed a focus album for the french label versatile, produced
the multi-talented nathan haines debut album and also remixed
tracks for chez music and for damon albarn's new mali music
project.
1. basic soul 'over the moon' (basement 282)
starting the mix off is none other than one of phil's earliest
productions - working together with luke 'duke' mcarthy this is
pure west london boogie!
2. lou 2 'freaky' (strictly rhythm)
lou 2 alias 'little' louie vega crops up here on his first of two
outings on headphone house, this is trademark maw style house from
one of the masters. often copied... never bettered.
3. ulterior motives 'hump night' (knockout records)
again, this is another pseudonym for a big u.s. artist - this time
the duo of john ciafone & lem springsteen aka mood ii swing. 'hump
night' is a smooth late night track perfect for headphone house.
4. kenny dixon jr 'emotional content' (intangible records)
licensed from terence parker's legendary intangible label, this
contribution comes from one of house music's most enigmatic
characters - kenny dixon jr aka moodyman.
5. blaze feat sajeda 'fantasy' (shelter records)
another of house music's legendary big players, this time blaze
feat sajeda with the classic 'fantasy'. recently remixed by
herbert, here we have the original mix.
6. mood ii swing 'do it your way' (groove on)
the second track from messrs ciafone & springsteen, and again a
classic track. licensed from the sadly defunct groove on label
from the us this is a great example of dub house disco at it's
finest.
7. love root ii 'funky emotions' (fourth floor records)
big gun danny tenaglia partners peter daou on love root ii's
'funky emotions' giving an indication to the influences to his
tribal sound. sounding similar to danny's ballroom edit of the
daou's 'give myself to you' this is a piano led stormer - perfect
once more for headphone house.
8. tikkle 'outer limits' (mirage records)
produced by wayne archibold of lnr fame - one of the originators
of the jackin' sound of detroit this track doesn't do much, but
what it does do it does with panache!
9. sole fusion 'basstone' (strictly rhythm)
'little' louie vega's second offering comes from new york stalwart
label strictly rhythm. swingy and addictive 'basstone' utilises
the drums from sun sun sun's 'curious' and is an underground gem
unearthed by few, but valuable nevertheless.
10. romanthony 'the wanderer' (prescription records)
perhaps this is romanthony's finest moment... those haunting
vocals with prince-like delivery, soulful to the extreme and a
pre-cursor to his work with daft punk et al.
11. txc-1 'paris by air' (generator records)
written by detroit dj alan oldham aka dj t-1000 and the mysterious
jackson, this is a subtler track compared to the industrial
strength techno oldham was more famed for in the mid 1990's.
12. black rascals feat cassio ware 'so in love' (polar records)
one of the original vocalists from the golden era of house music
and erstwhile blaze collaborator cassio ware produces another gem,
this time in the form of 'so in love' a great ending to the
musical journey that is headphone house.
