           ░        DEVIN TOWNSEND doesn't consider The              ░
           ░        Puzzle and Snuggles as regular albums,           ░
           ░        but as a prelude to the next, by Townsend        ░
           ░        standards, well, normal record                   ░
           ░        Lightwork. Both discs are ambient works,         ░
           ░        roughly comparable to The Hummer. The            ░
           ░        Puzzle has a strong experimental, partly         ░
           ░        jazzy impact, in the most extreme passages       ░
           ░        the disc sounds as if Hevy Devy, Frank           ░
           ░        Zappa, Robert Fripp and a futuristic film        ░
           ░        noir soundtrack were hurtling towards hell       ░
           ░        in a still frosty elevator. Some of it is        ░
           ░        a (carefully filed) fragment, some of it         ░
           ░        is multi-dimensional head cinema, some of        ░
           ░        it is just nerdy sound play. The much            ░
           ░        shorter Snuggles comes across much more          ░
           ░        relaxed, here Devin, musically quite             ░
           ░        sophisticated, floats through chilled            ░
           ░        sound worlds in which there is no room for       ░
           ░        everyday stress. The fact that both              ░
           ░        records are clearly more than just a snack       ░
           ░        in between can be seen in the long guest         ░
           ░        list with names like Steve Vai, Jed Simon,       ░
           ░        Che Aimee Dorval and Mike Keneally.              ░
