░ Chester Arthur Burnett was born on June 10, 1910. ░
░ The man from Mississippi, who had shaped the ░
░ Chicago Blues so much, however, became known as ░
░ Howlin' Wolf, sometimes the spelling on some ░
░ records was also Howling Wolf. ░
░ ░
░ The powerful man with a height of about 1.90 meters ░
░ had a correspondingly powerful voice and is ░
░ considered one of the most important ░
░ representatives of the Chicago blues. One ░
░ associates him with his great songs like "How Many ░
░ More Years", "Moanin' at Midnight", "Riding in the ░
░ Moonlight", "Smokestack Lightning", "Sitting on Top ░
░ of the World", "Spoonful" or "I Ain't ░
░ Superstitious". But not only this enormously ░
░ powerful and rough voice was his trademark, he also ░
░ set appropriate accents with the blues harp. ░
░ ░
░ He learned to play the guitar from bluesman Charley ░
░ Patton, back in the thirties in the Mississippi ░
░ Delta, where Patton lived at the time. Other ░
░ influences for Burnett were the Mississippi Sheiks, ░
░ Blind Lemon Jefferson, Ma Rainey, Lonnie Johnson, ░
░ Tampa Red, Blind Blake and Tommy Johnson. His ░
░ harmonica playing was modeled on the sound of Sonny ░
░ Boy Williamson II. After military service and a ░
░ stopover in West Memphis, Arkansas and the ░
░ formation of his first own band, in 1948, he was ░
░ discovered by Ike Turner and with Sam Phillips he ░
░ was able to record his first songs. ░
░ ░
░ His first record came out in 1959, which was ░
░ "Moanin' In The Moonlight." Big City Blues is the ░
░ third release and is actually a compilation and was ░
░ not available for a long time. It includes a ░
░ collection of Wolf recordings made in 1951-1952 for ░
░ the Modern label. The album, which also appeared as ░
░ "Howling Wolf Sings The Blues", is complemented in ░
░ this collector's edition by fifteen bonus tracks ░
░ that include a variety of other pieces (including ░
░ obscure ones) recorded by Howlin`Wolf between 1951 ░
░ and 1962. ░
