Being the UK's equivalent of Peter Brotzmann means that as far
as free jazz saxophonists go, Evan Parker has very few equals.
A man who gets much respect and who has a rich and varied back
catalogue, Parker has graced the free jazz racks for the last
forty years starting with the SME in 1967. This rare outing
for Tzadik (so fresh that it's still showing as upcoming on
their website) is a solo joint, not traditionally solo though,
think multitracked with each piece ringing out in varied
voices, from calmed reflection to turbulent far reaching
aggro. One piece features an organ drone backing, but apart
from that it's a heads down experience that's far from easy
listening. His recent appearances on ECM may lull you into the
wrong state of expectation, those CD's reach back into Manfred
Eicher's early days of world class improv but that's another
story altogether. A specialized, truly intense listen.
