Deep Time harbors two performances of a Fritz Hauser
composition that was commissioned in 1991. Performance one
begins as a field of industrial scrape and clatter, an
assemblage of bowing and polyrhythmic taps, and the matured
sounds of Urs LeimburgerÆs tenor sax set against the slightly
astringent squeals from Pauline Oliveros accordion. There is a
distinctly earthly, tactile feel to the sparse arrangements at
first, but as the composition develops, the soft moans of
Leimburger's sax become thinned and bodiless, and the melodic
overtones of Oliveros' accordion are wrangled into abrasive
resonances. Hauser's scalpel-sharp placement of twittering
bird calls and snapping branches nonetheless maintains the
carnal, muddy aura.
The arc of the second performance is, not surprisingly, quite
similar to the first. In this version, however, Hauser's
percussion is more active and dominant, his movements
outlining the friction and relishing the vibration. Just as
the leafy branches of the album artwork threaten to smother
any ailing wanderer who happens to traipse by, so, too, do the
scything sax howls and aberrant accordion lines threaten to
consume the listener in their almost religious fervor, as
croaked notes and growls lurk ever closer to the brink of
intelligibility, grim and mournful.
