:: that the band wants to go back to the roots and that A ::
:: Handful of Stars was an experiment. They still rely on ::
:: short but intense records and so Eternal Turn Of The Wheel ::
:: only features 36:06 minutes of playing time, which are ::
:: devided on more or less four songs (plus one, if you want ::
:: to count the intro). While their latest record was defined ::
:: through the extensive use of post-metal influences, ::
:: combined with some jazzy ones, Eternal Turn Of The Wheel is ::
:: a lot harsher and faster. Of course they still focus on ::
:: atmosphere, despite the basic orchestral fundament. ::
:: ::
:: The intro tries to create a calm, but tense atmosphere ::
:: through the use of acoustic guitars combined with the noise ::
:: of the wind, as you are waiting for something to happen. ::
:: The transition to the first song Breath of Cold Black Soil ::
:: is really hard, as the song starts really fast and ::
:: furiously which is a huge contrast to the intro. The body ::
:: of sound is defined through fast riffs, thick walls of ::
:: synthesizer sounds and fast drum patterns with slow blast ::
:: beats. Everything is rounded as soon as the vocals are ::
:: kicking in, which feature this typical Drudkh sound. This ::
:: constellation defines nearly the whole song, as only some ::
:: changes in the drum pattern occur over a long time. The ::
:: last third of the song is dominated by slower, spheric ::
:: passages and nearly all of the song will feature a similiar ::
:: structure. Although the compositions are quite simple, they ::
:: are really catchy and moody and clearly Drudkh. ::
:: ::
:: This means, that fans of their previous records, who didnÆt ::
:: liked A Handful Of Stars can breathe through, as the new ::
:: material features songs that could have been on records ::
:: like Blood in Our Wells respectively Autumn ::
:: Aurora/Microcosmos. They kept the same list of ingredients ::
:: they used on this records to create the songs on Eternal ::
:: Turn Of The Wheel, but as before they changed the dosis and ::
:: the result is therefore slightly different. Although the ::
:: ingredients are good as always, the record lacks some fresh ::
:: wind, like the one A Handful Of Stars offered (some smaller ::
:: influences are still there, like you can hear at the end of ::
:: When Gods Leave Their Emerald Halls). Of course itÆs ::
:: praiseworthy, that they didnÆt enhance the amount of post- ::
:: metal on this record, as they have done with Old Silver ::
:: Key, but the step backwards wasnÆt the best decision either ::
:: way. ::
:: ::
:: Eternal Turn Of The Wheel indicates two things: One the one ::
:: hand, the somewhat negative statements on the post-metal ::
:: influences seem to have affected the band (as they changed ::
:: the style again), so that they made a huge step backwards ::
:: at cost of creativity. On the other hand, you have to say ::
:: that Drudkh are still able to write better black metal ::
:: songs than a whole bunch of bands, although itÆs bleaching ::
:: out a bit with every record. ::
