Salty Lays and Sweet Leaf--The Story of Rotary Downs: Rotary Downs began in a
closet circa 1999, experimenting with a new mind-expanding beverage called
"beer" and exotic inhalants they quickly dubbed "cigarettes". The first record
was then recorded at the Mermaid Lounge, a dark and dank concession under the
interstate. It was here that the great _______ Salon was formed, a fin de siecle
think tank whose tenets were not dispersed much, as they could barely be
remembered. A mostly nostalgic album emerged. The twentieth century was ushered
out with a pat on the butt and a sympathetic smile. The group, reassembled,
found itself recording in Tennessee two years later, laying down the songs that
would make up Long After the Thrill. Much of this music was written around the
recent addition of pedal steel guitar, and viola would also figure more
prominently into the mix. The band stayed at the Econolodge by the Memphis
airport, which soon became known as "Econopube" (due to a lone hair affixed to
the hot/cold sink knob that was observed upon arrival). No Salon was formed and
few ideas were exchanged. Showers were taken separately. The local pigmeat made
available to them was deemed excellent. On the advisement of the engineer, Msgr.
Easley, they pursued the deadest sound possible. Sessions began with Irish tea
and ended with Canadian Whiskey. A puppy was discovered on the exterior premises
and befriended. A sprawling set of songs results, some dreary, all deadly as
predetermined. Summer of 2003, back in New Orleans to record Quitters EP, the
band hurled forth six random nuggets in the general direction of the tape
machine and its operator, Goat Gilchrist. Four of the tracks were finished on
the spot, with the cajoling of dubious/confused band members and a determination
to fill the purchased tapes. Significantly different from the previous record,
(as much as that one was from the first one), Quitters EP was a sweeping out
from underneath the couch cushions. The completion of this eclectic handful
marked the end of one phase and the beginning of another. Shortly after the
completion of Quitters EP, the band's rhythm section was kidnapped by a brutal
international terrorist network known as "women" (but more officially referred
to as "chicks"). The remaining members were never able to meet the outlandish
demands of these "women", and the usurped drummer and bassist remain locked away
in undisclosed locations to this day. Soon, however, new band members were
recruited, resulting in more drums, more bass, and more keys. In September,
Rotary Downs will present its latest full-length CDan album that began in New
Orleans but was blown westward by Hurricane Katrina and, ultimately, completed
in the psychedelic swamplands of Lafayette, Louisiana. Currently, the band
prepares for its tour of the now well-rinsed Dirty South.
