Vopat make it almost possible to imagine that there are more frightening
entities in Texas than those is our current administration. Formed from the
remnants of the Austin instrumental band A Five and Dime Ship, This is a twofer
from Vopat, a new ten song release and a second disc, the out of print
ôcalcuttaö EP. Both feature the kind of sludgy ambience that Vopat is known for.
This entire set comes in at just over an hour, but given the intensity of the
work, you are more than drained at the finish line.
The ten songs on ôTell Them..ö incorporate everything handy, from noise and
distortion, found sounds, accordion, and vocal montage, making for a relentless
collage of sound, rarely giving the listener a breath before assaulting and
challenging with the new section. ôSummer Ruskö is just brutal, yet, like all
the tracks, is layered and dense, open to interpretation and mood. Likewise,
ôLift Usö and the title track both propel us to the finish-line while still
giving and taking; this is a draining listen, but always there is just enough
energy left to hear what they will show you next. This is a band that already
has its own sound and agenda; Vopat has vision and balls, an all too rare combo
these days.
