Icons of Elegance are two brothers based in Helsinki and London
combining overly melodic pop songs with folky banjos and nicely
battered guitars.
In 1997 a teenage Henri moved to London to study jazz guitar. However,
it didn?t take too long before he ended up composing arty avant-garde
and playing slightly distorted guitar in local indie bands - you can
catch him with his other band Cartridge or on stage at some sub-Fluxus
happening.
His older brother Anssi has still not dragged himself over to London
despite numerous promises and consistent visits. Instead, he continues
playing bass and producing bands back home in Helsinki. Check out his
bass playing with chart favourites Scandinavian Music Group and his
production on stuff like Marko SillanpΣΣ, So-So and Jippu.
Since the brothers always shared a touchingly unanimous (and perfect)
taste in music, it was only a matter of time before they'd start
writing songs together. But first there was a Dali photograph, then
the band name and finally the band. The first demos were mailed
between Finland and England in June 2002 and when the best 13 songs
were chosen the duo entered the studio in February 2003. The result
was "Ether Talk" - a fine collection of classic pop songs released on
their own Aah Records in 2004.
Quickly picked up by Rubato Music in Finland, the band continue their
well-honed craft on their latest album "Through the Broken Window".
Once again they've come up with the sweetest of pop sounds. You know,
the kind they used to make where the melodies are strong, harmonies
sweet and guitar playing rude. Playing most of the instruments
themselves, they got a few friends over to add a bit of banjo,
autoharp and pedal steel and there you've got it - Icons of Elegance!
