As the title suggests, this is a compendium of some of the permanent and
semi-permanent sidemen with whom Oscar played in the various groups he led
during his musical career. In 1972, 1973, and 1974, Norman Granz managed to find
"practically all the musicians with whom Oscar had played and to record them the
way they played, or as close as possible, when they were part of his working
groups." Several tunes were recorded with each group, some of which appeared on
History of an Artist, vol. 1. A number of unreleased masters were chosen for a
second volume; both volumes are contained in the CD set. This history also
includes material with Joe Pass and Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, who have been
playing with Oscar on most of his personal appearances and many of his records
for the last ten years. All of the sides were studio recordings with the
exception of "Reunion Blues," cut with Pass and Pedersen, which was done live at
the London House in Chicago.
