For those not in the know, Joy Disaster are a Post-Punk band based in
France. Having formed in February 2005, the band have grown up fast
with a series of self released cds culminating in their debut CD,
'J.D'. Having gained positive feedback across Europe, the band are keen
to keep their momentum. 'J.D.' puts to bed all their previous efforts,
adding great production, new songs & passionate performance. The whole
feel of the album is dark, the cover reflects a Dickensian Britain
(imagine Jack The Ripper, Ladies of the Night, Pick Pockets & a thick
suffocating fog). The music is angular, punk fueled yet with a
sophisticated goth chic. The introduction to the album sees the
creation a monster (except from Frankenstein), Joy Disaster have done
just this, 'Human Robots' is a classic opener. With it's sinister
opening bass & samples it leads into storming punk rocker. Imagine
early Placebo if Molko & co had turned the guitars up LOUD . Singer
Nicolas Rohr has found his voice here. " We Are Human" he screams as
the track closes. More like Bauhaus fueled Zombies!
'Senseless Tale' makes use of Franz Mac's excellent bass sound,
probably the best since Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures. In the past
the band may have been likened to the Ian Curtis's un-merry mob, but
they have thrown off these tags on this debut album. The band sound
tighter, less stripped down & more punk. There's certainly a cloud of
the gothic which runs through everything they do, yet their actual band
sound is tight, Post Punk held together through excellent use of drums,
bass & anger fueled guitar. There's even a touch of the morose with
'Black Old Thief', which brings the doom fueled sound fully to the
front but with a great sing-along chorus that reminds of the The
Wildhearts vocal harmonies. 'Hang Around' makes another appearence,
first cited as 'very close' to Interpol's Evil, yet miles better in a
previous review. Interpol were never a band with the right passion,
image over substance. 'Joy Disaster' may have opposing forces in their
name but everything else is focused & pin-point. There's so much on
this album to make Joy Disaster this years most unlikely cross-over
band. 'Walk Alone' features thudding drums & a furious drive. If it
wasn't hidden under the gory vocals & furious guitars you'd see they
write perfect pop music. Which leads to 'Artemis' which takes alot from
another great 'Gothic' pop group, The Cure. The keyboard string effects
in the intro recall Robert Smith at his best, mixing the dark with the
light to refreshing effect.
ENJOY THIS FUCKING GOOD ALBUM AND BUY IT !!
