The fast-rising Ecstasy Garage Disco imprint welcomes a new name to
its roster: exiled South Londoner Koyla. While the debutant producer
has eclectic tastes - the accompanying press release mentions
"noughties fidget, coldwave" and "runway house" - the four tracks here
were all inspired by classic deep house of the '80s. Kolya first
offers up a gorgeous, sun-splashed mixture of post Italo-disco
sequenced bass, colourful lead lines and spacey chords on 'Stick
Together', before doffing a cap to the Nu Groove-era work of the
Burrell Brothers on 'Miss Honey Prancin' in the Twilite'. 'Crying Over
Spilt Poppers' sees him cannily combine electrofunk bass and shuffling
machine drums with immersive chords and classic house vocal samples,
while 'Jamais Vu' is an ultra-deep, analogue-rich deep house gem
straight from the top drawer.
