after a plethora of orgasmic releases on labels like foundsound,
microcosm, karloff, einmaleins and alphahouse, miskate (real name
kate iwanowicz) has made her mark with recent live performances
around the world and an inimitable experimental techno sound
intricately crafted with found sounds from various sources that range
from a microphone in her hand to a movie on her screen. miskate is a
cofounder of the foundsound label and a mastermind at making
dancefloors blissfully squirm amidst her music's quirky eccentricity
and rhythmic oddities. miskate's latest two-track release, pharm
whacker ep, is an inventive expansion of her playful and psychotropic
approach to minimal dance music. the "a1" side ("week whacker") is a
long-play dancefloor burner that aggressively plunges through the
speakers, meanwhile maintaining a deep and heady undertone at the
same time. the track bounces with a relentless dirty synth bassline,
hard-hitting rim shots and swingy percussion. but these rhythms drive
beneath twisted arrangements of found sounds like gurgling farm
animals, whispering voices, buzzing tones, spilling sticks onto a
hard floor, crunching dry leaves, scraping hand tools, and other
random peculiarities. the breakdown is goofy and remarkably
tripped-out. if the dj is eccentric enough, this track can work
nicely during peak-time hours. the "b1" side ("pharm farm") is
another long-play masterpiece -- but deeper than the flipside and
more fitting for the afterhours. the track bounces gently with a
subtle deep house vibe through swingy rat-a-tat percussion, a soft
kick drum, and an irresistible portamento bassline. meanwhile, the
deep groove is playfully interwoven with cut up voices, children
laughing and shouting, liquids spilling, camels barking, fuzzy
windblowing, and warm reverbs. spin this tune as the sun comes up,
and watch the people turn the dancefloor into a playground.
therefore, miskate is eccentric, and miskate is cool. play this shit
