Warm acoustic instrumentation, naked lo-fi melodies, as much
ritual as music.
Intr_Version (INTR018CD)
"Mill Farm" tells its stories with the eyes-closed throb of
Animal Collective, the lyrical spider-webs of Joanna Newsom,
the front-porch lilt of Akron/Family, and the acoustic
unhinging of Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice. It pulses
with the sound of acoustic instruments played with no one
watching û guitar, harmonium, autoharp, instruments borrowed
from a baby brother û with the thump and flutter of drum
machines and computer mystery. Its lyrics walk down roads
without sidewalks, climb cherry trees without low branches,
and scribble letters that will never be sent.
On their Avia Gardner dΘbut, "More Than Tongue Can Tell",
Mitchell Akiyama and Jenna Robertson invited listeners into a
world of sepia-toned melodies and delicate instrumentation.
The Montreal groupÆs follow-up, recorded in the isolation of
the Massachusetts countryside, leaves most of the Baroque
frills and digital intervention behind. "Mill Farm"Æs spare,
lo-fi beauty reflects a process of withdrawal into a hidden
room where instruments were the only furniture. In this, "Mill
Farm" is as much ritual as music.
"Mill Farm" is the sound of two musicians leaving home. It is
a letting go of in order to move closer. It is an invitation
to come and see for yourself.
PRESS:
"Mitchell Akiyama and vocalist Jenna Robertson offer up
wistful and contemplative electronic-folk dream pop, at once
thundering and gentle." // Rated 8.5/10 in Montreal Mirror.
"Jenna RobertsonÆs brittle, innocent voice merges with
AkiyamaÆs fractured piano, static, strings and things to
create eerily intimate, otherworldly lullabies. Strange and
Beautiful." // Montreal Gazetta
"Robertson and Akiyama craft disarmingly lovely electrified
madrigals and ballads." // Cyclic Defrost (Australia)
"Jenna Robertson and Mitchell Akiyama seem to reside in a
world where time has fractured: ghostly horns and violins sit
alongside chopped up drum patterns and chilly electronic
glitch; pianos are mauled by digital carnivores, stripping the
sound of flesh and leaving only skeletal remains; a storm of
static assails us with gale force. The music is almost
indescribable, except in terms of its dichotomy. Floating on
top of the maelstrom is RobertsonÆs ethereal voice, breathy
yet powerful. This album is a welcome addition to the
seemingly unending barrage of great music finding itÆs way out
of Montreal these days." // www.digitalisindustries.com
