RELEASE NOTES
Paul Parkhill cut his musical teeth as a child playing the spoons at family
hootenannies in the New England woods. Unsatisfied with this musical trajectory,
he learned guitar and soon submitted to the irresistible pull of the garage/punk
scene of 1980s Boston, at that time a province of Burma. After moving to New
York City in 1987, Paul went on to start several earnest, short-lived and
ultimately ill-fated bands. By the early 1990s, his adolescence over and Seattle
ascendent, he stopped writing songs and spent the next decade listening to old
vinyl. Then in 2001, shaken out of complacency by a stolen presidency, an attack
on New York, the birth of his first child, and his own strange urban
fascinations, Parkhill's muse returned. Building on hokum-hillbilly foundations
and lingering post-punk sensibilities, the new songs addressed themes of
industrial decline, gentrification, marriage, children, American empire,
evangelism, McCarthyism and urban redevelopment. When a critical mass of songs
finally came together, Paul contacted Derek Denckla, an old friend and fellow
Brooklynite. Derek's sensibility was formed in the Dischord of the '80s the D.C.
indie hardcore scene, where the Rite of Spring was solemnly propitiated. He
helped start Simple Machines Records with Jenny Toomey and played in the bands
Geek and Choke, among others. When the call came, Derek was initially conflicted
about revisiting youthful rock dreams after a 15 year hiatus. He eventually
agreed after long-winded caveats about his availability, musicianship and
overall human worth. In early 2005, having worked the songs through solo voice
and guitar mode, the duo sought to fill out the bands instrumentation. Derek
invited his friend Carl Hum to play bass and Paul brought in Dan Spagna on
drums. A native of Sunset Park, Brooklyn, Carl played for several bands in the
late 80s, including Never on Sunday. Like Derek, Carl expressed some initial
reservations about rusty chops, but was coaxed into breaking out the WD-40 to
blow out an industrial groove foundation for the nascent and chaotic guitar
scratchings. Dan Spagna, a rock and roll scientist, carved order out of the
rhythmic tangle presented to him. Dan has been in too many other musical outfits
to mention here. He brings a detailed but off-beat approach to drumming, a la
Peter Prescott and Keith Moon. Building Six began taking shape in mid-2004 and
played consistantly in New York City since mid-2005 under the name 'Department
of Buildings.'
