     I do hope you remember Third Eye Foundation û I certainly do, the
     man (now known by his birth name Matt Elliott) was responsible for
     some of the most submerged, noisy and downright leftfield
     electronic music of the 1990s, and he was never even labelled with
     the æelectronicaÆ genre tag? Well, the thing is, Elliott came from
     Bristol and happened to use chopped up amen breaks every once in a
     while, so he slipped into the drum æn bass genre as if by
     accident. Okay so maybe it was something to do with the fact that
     æSemtexÆ (one of ElliottÆs earliest releases) was a banging drum
     æn bass anthem, but thatÆs beside the point û his albums were
     always far deeper than simple genre classification would allow.
     With this epic package Domino have done something truly magical in
     collecting the three æproperÆ Third Eye Foundation albums and then
     bumping them up with a bunch of bonus tracks û thatÆs a lot of
     listening material. I first came across the Third Eye Foundation
     after hearing their incredible Mogwai remix on the seminal
     æKicking a Dead PigÆ compilation, but I quickly went out and got
     hold of æGhostÆ, ElliottÆs debut album. I was instantly confronted
     by a barrage of industrial noise and samples held together by the
     most distorted junglist beats IÆd ever heard. There were trace
     elements of so many different types of music amidst the fog and
     dense distortion that it was hard to even make them out sometimes.
     I suppose it was no surprise that Kraak artist Foehn appears on
     æThe StarÆs Gone OutÆ, as Elliott probably has more in common with
     the world of free noise than with any other genre. As vague string
     samples tumble over slowed down vocals all set to beats that
     genuinely send shivers down your spine itÆs hard not to be won
     over. Even more interestingly û this album still sounds
     contemporary; okay jungle rhythms might not be æfashionableÆ any
     more, but Matt ElliottÆs early works could never be successfully
     classified and that still stands. Giving you more extra value than
     you can shake a stick at û Domino have plonked tracks from the
     incredible æSemtexÆ 12ö and æSound of ViolenceÆ on to the end of
     the disc. The second record æYou Guys Kill MeÆ moved slightly
     further away from æGhostÆs disturbing walls of noise but managed
     to keep the moody ambience intact, creating a dark Lynchian
     atmosphere replete with wails and detuned samples. Ending on the
     albumÆs highlight æIn Bristol with a PistolÆ this new disc comes
     with a new extended version subtitled æThe Full 9mmÆ which takes
     the track even further into the realms of doom. The third and
     final part is ElliottÆs last album proper under the Third Eye
     Foundation moniker; æLittle Lost SoulÆ, which continued his
     journey away from the trappings of drum æn bass and moved further
     into the phantasmagorical pseudo-soundtracks he would become
     better known for. The clear highlight here is the eleven minute
     epic æLostÆ which revolves around an acoustic guitar loop
     embellished by distorted vocals and wailing electric guitar noise.
     When the low slung beats come in it serves just to accentuate the
     melancholia rather than serve as a call to move your feet and
     perfectly completes ElliottÆs transition. Interestingly this disc
     comes with a rather bizarre uptempo remix of æLostÆ from
     Manyfingers, who has been a long-time collaborator of ElliottÆs,
     along with a bunch of rare live remixes. All in all this is an
     indispensable package for interested Matt Elliott fans, and if you
     havenÆt heard any of these records before then you simply canÆt go
     without û essential!
