ATMA Classique reveals an unexpected side of Les
Violons du Roy with its new CD release, Piazzolla
(SACD2 2399), the ensembleÆs first foray into the
worldÆs most sensual and passionate music, the
tango. Under the baton of Associate Conductor
Jean-Marie Zeitouni, Les Violons du Roy, best known
for their interpretations of baroque and classical
masterpieces, are transformed into a tango ensemble
that caresses every nuance of Argentine composer
Astor PiazzollaÆs ônew tangoö pieces. Piazzolla is
presented on a Hybrid SACD (including
high-resolution stereo and SACD Surround Sound).
Born to Italian parents in Argentina in 1921, Astor
Piazzolla is credited with having revived the
tango, a form which originated in the slums and
brothels or Buenos Aires towards the end of the
19th century. With such influences as Bart≤k and
Stravinsky, and the encouragement of his teachers
Alberto Ginastera and Nadia Boulanger, Piazzolla
shaped the tango nuevo movement with compositions
that blend Argentine tradition, jazz and art music.
Piazzolla opens with the 1960s composition Las
Cuatro Estanτiones porte±as, a nod to VivaldiÆs The
Four Seasons that includes a clever and direct
quotation from the baroque masterpiece, and a
virtuoso solo violin performance by Pascale
GiguΦre. Other works featured are Two Tangos for
String Orchestra: Coral, which combines the
harmonies and melodic forms of the tango with the
sobriety of BachÆs chorales; and the contrasting
Canyeunge; two works from PiazzollaÆs ôangel
seriesö, Milonga del ┴ngel; and La Muerte del
┴ngel; Fuga y Misterio featuring the solo violins
of Michelle Seto and Pascale GiguΦre; and Graciela
y Buenos Aires by PiazzollaÆs collaborator JosΘ
Bragato, a work composed in a single day as a
birthday gift for a young woman, integrating solo
cello (Benoεt Loiselle) against the backdrop of a
voluptuous tango.
As Associate Conductor of Les Violons du Roy,
Jean-Marie Zeitouni has worked closely with the
ensemble since 2001, leading them in over 100
performances across North America. Since 2002, Mr.
Zeitouni has been Associate Conductor and
Choirmaster at the OpΘra de MontrΘal and Musical
Director of their Young Artist program. He is also
Music Director of the Opera as Theatre program at
The Banff Centre. He is active as an operatic
conductor, with engagements that have taken him to
the Glimmerglass, MontrΘal, QuΘbec, Cincinnati and
Calgary opera companies. A versatile musician, Mr.
Zeitouni has made many appearances as a symphonic
guest conductor, arranger and percussionist with
orchestras and chamber ensembles around the world.
