New Mono Inc. MCD. Mixture between Electronic and Gothic Rock.
It doesnt matter who listens really, reaction to Mono Incs debut album
"Head under Water" is nearly always the same: "That Voice", they all
say, "is absolutely awesome." In the summer of 2004 the band gathered
at its favorite table in a bar in Hamburgs University neighborhood to
talk analyse their music. In front of them, the album with its twelve
dark rock songs, saturated guitar, booming bass, strong drums. And then
theres that voice. But Miky Mono, Mono Inc. front man, has no
explanation for it. Of course, hell never forget that fateful accident
back in the year 2000 not his first hospitalitzation as an extreme
athlete. This time a crash-landing with a motorized hang glider broke
two neck vertibrae, temporarily paralysing him. In the course of the
ensuring operation, surgeons planted a metal plate into his neck. Its
still there today. "Maybe thats what changed my voice", says Miky. In
any case it got me thinking about life. I decided to concentrate on
important things." For him, one of them was music. Seven years earlier
the band sat at exactly the same place, their "lucky table". The
situation back then was hardly encouraging. The years of the hits with
"Wild Thing" and their road tours had passed, their lead vocalist had
abandoned the band and everyone was wondering what would happen next.
"As that time, I was sure of only one thing," Mono Inc lead gitarist
Carl Fornia recalls. "Together with our drummer we wanted to continue."
So they needed a top front man. After the 40th audition failed to yield
a satisfactory voice, the band made a decision. Their bass and
background singer Miky would get the job. For him, this meant crash
courses. A total of three vocal teachers worked on training his voice.
And within a year the band was playing its first gigs, recording a few
songs which were playing on the radio and well-known producers were
knocking at their door. But none of the musicians was really satisfied
yet. Everyone sensed it. They just werent there yet. The insistence of
their record company that they sing in German was causing acute
discomfort to all three. Miky: "Things were going up and down and left
and right all at the same time." Then, lift-off. An invitation from
Crash Test Dummies to tour through Canada, led the band to switch to
English. And then during a studio session the three began to experiment
with the vocals. Mikys, until then second voice, became lead and the
Mono Sound was born. "Suddenly we all realized that this is our music",
Carl explains. "This is us and we can get this across." And Miky
expands, "Back then we learned that its better to what you believe in
than to let others bend you." This has remained the motto of Mono Inc.
Since then the band does nearly everything itself." Their most
important project: "an album that comes from all of us." And a complete
line-up with bassist Manuel Antoni. After five months, they were there,
the album completed. Mono Inc toured through Germany in the fall of
2003 as support group for Tanzwut, which gave the band more impetus.
The reaction of the audiences was hotter than expected. The new man on
bass had really grooved himself in. Back home, "Head under Water" is
spinning in the CD player. And anyone listening to any of the twelve
songs can tell immediately: this band knows what it wants. And then
theres that voice ...
