In the recent tradition of great classic electronic
releases 1REAL strikes again with the amazingly rare
first release of the Future Sound of London's first -and
only- live work: ISDN.
To the dupecheckers and nukers out there: the other
release of ISDN already out is the normal retail version
that differs in a few tracks and didn't contain the
beautiful artwork.
It was 1994, the british electronic music scene had
already got some momentum, but still the good
productions were limited to a few artists and a handful
of labels. FSOL had broken new grounds with their
earlier works: the single Papua New Guinea, the albums
Tales of Ephidrina (under the pseudonym of Amorphous
Androgynous), Accelerator and Lifeforms. ISDN
was a departure from their previous, more 'organic',
sound, blending fast rythms with their unique aural
landscapes, but still not as scary as the world they
evoked in their following work Dead Cities. In their
tradition of innovation, FSOL pioneered the concept of a
live studio concert, broadcasted on radios all over the
world thanks to the new telecommunication technologies
(ISDN digital phone lines). This album, although not a
live in the normal sense, has the same spirit,
collecting different performances over about a year of
radio concerts.
As the Warp label advised in their early releases
"listen with an open mind".
Here are some other reviews:
Amazon - "They're so antisocial," said Mixmaster Morris
of the reclusive Future Sound of London. "They won't
even go to parties anymore--they do all their gigs over
the telephone." After the success of their majestic
"Papua New Guinea" single and the Accelerator album
from which it was taken, FSOL retreated to the studio
and never left. Their only communication with the
outside world was through their music, an increasingly
abstract Dadaist collage of overdubbed beats and noises
that defied genres and stymied trend-happy
journalists. While some of the material on ISDN was
previously released under the pseudonym Far Out Son of
Lung (the worst-kept secret in dance music), the bulk of
the album was taped from performances delivered via
digital telephone links to radio stations throughout
Europe. Naturally, the ubiquitous and intrusive medium
of radio encourages challenging and elaborate
environmental music. So unlike their previous album,
Lifeforms, whose closest earthly relation was techno,
ISDN is the distant cousin of jazz, both in its blatant
sampling of sax and drums and its freeform, exploratory

"...has more bite and more energy [than LIFEFORMS],
possibly as a result of being performed live...the ideal
soundtrack for going surfing around the rings of Saturn
or hang-gliding through the methane clouds of
Jupiter..."
Option (3-4/95, p.104) - "...Future Sound Of London
[FSOL] seems to have gotten the mix just right. Even
more minimal than the Orb, FSOL builds its pieces in
layers, electronically generating a nice range of
textures that are more ominous than polished.
Beats come and go, as do a number of sounds that seem
like they may be more at home on an arcade game
AMG EXPERT REVIEW: 4.5/5 - "A masterful, nearly seamless
fusion of ambient, trip-hop, soul-jazz, electro,
industrial-leaning techno, and styles yet unclassified,
reportedly recorded live for ISDN uplink to various
radio stations around the world (hence the name)". (...)
Finally some technical notes. The CD was ripped as a
single track since they were all blended with each
other, and the CUE file contains all the correct titles
so it can be used with the mp3cue plugin for winamp. The
CD was mastered at a very high level so in order to
avoid clipping it was normalized to -0.48dB. Encoding
was done by LAME with the highest quality setting. The
result speaks for itself. Enjoy!
