Don't get me wrong: I hated high school math as much as the next person. But
Stanislaw Stories, We Be The Echo's newest disc of math rock beats, is to high
school math what Chopin is to "Chopsticks." The songs rest on a complex,
shifting foundation of rhythms provided by prodigiously talented
guitarist-turned-drummer Ilkka Koskello. Myke Stryker's bass weaves over and
around the beats like a charmed snake. Over everything, Graeme Nicholls provides
a demonic lead guitar, each note crisp and perfect even while played at
incredible speeds.
We Be The Echo, comprised of many of the former members of the B Minor
Relocation Program, has grown up a little since their last album, Cubist Music.
Their new version of "Dry Or Damp IÆm Still The Champ" moves at an even more
breakneck pace than the original, but it's clear the boys have given more
thought to their arrangement. We Be The Echo draws inspiration from all kinds of
genres: "Disco Fever Blister" provides traditional disco sounds wrapped up in
the four-beat rhythms and harmonies the band is known for, and "ThatÆs No Goon,
ThatÆs A Space Station" uses the rapid-fire notes of a surf guitar to emphasize
its beat-squared riffs. Put Stanislaw Songs on at a party to impress your indie
rock friends; leave it on when you ask the cute physics nerd in the corner to
cut a rug with you.
