│ │
│ The stealthy Scott Herren pops up with another side project, │
│ delivered again with almost no warning or hype. A Cloud Mireya │
│ consist of vocalist Claudia Deheza with production by Herren. │
│ You're thinking Savath & Savalas part two, and you're almost │
│ right... and there's nothing wrong with that. Herren brings out │
│ the best in female vocalists, kinda like a Penthouse │
│ photographer. "Those Nights(1)" is a wonderful introduction, │
│ the crisp angelic sounds remind of the Cocteau Twins and Mia │
│ Doi Todd melted into one. This is definitely a balanced affair, │
│ "Safety In Number One(2)" firmly places Claudia in front, │
│ allowing you to concentrate on her lyrics (damn, Prefuse has │
│ gone super-professional). There's also a heavy presence of │
│ soft-psyche style tracks like "Illusdional(3), "Winter │
│ Sleep(4)" and beat-less track "These Flowers(5)." For the big │
│ comedown, check out the longplayer "Bliss Intersection(6)" │
│ (check the incredibleness at the 10 minute mark) which clocks │
│ in at over 12 minutes. 12 tracks in all, definite winter blues, │
│ warm bed, cold floor material. │
│ │
│ The Singular LP is an Intamite collection of songs recorded │
│ over the past three years between Caludia Deheza │
│ (On!Air!Library! and Daylight's for Birds) and Guillermo S │
│ Herren (Prefuse 73, Savath and Savalas, among others). They │
│ started recording and playing songs together in their downtime │
│ from other projects and busy schedules after meeting on a tour │
│ they shared. In the beginning, they started with simple │
│ lullabies which eventually progressed to more involved pieces, │
│ one of which runs almost 15 minutes here. Nonetheless, the │
│ "production values" were ignored and all songs keep their │
│ natural state evoking the moments they were first played. The │
│ focus here lies in the beauty of Claudia's voice and harmonies │
│ over the playing of free floating guitars, found sounds, and │
│ the occasional drums that sneak in... The magic of this record │
│ is in the pureness and fragile state of its form. The simple │
│ recording processes and natural "imperfections" of the album │
│ overcome recording conventions that would otherwise lose the │
│ addictive and sometimes timeless charm it holds. │
│ │
│ Lover's rock it is indeed. │
│ │
│ Word. │
