Nor Season, Nor Hard-Handed Lesson is, simply put, brilliant. Jordan O' Jordan
(AKA Jordan Smith) has assembled an expansive collection of songs and stories
for his first proper full-length with Columbus Discount Records. Ranging in
theme from the gothic Appalachia of his childhood to coture fashion design to
psychedelic vision, Not Style... endears, entertains, breaks your heart, and
leaves you reaching for the play button again and again.
The album is a careful mixture of solo and ensemble performances, as Jordan's
voice (ringing and vibrant throughout) and banjo share space comfortably with
broke-down orchestral dirges and violin accompaniments.
All of this is in service to sprawling, Dylanesque songwriting and vaudvillian
asides. "Niagara, Niagara" is achingly gorgeous, while "A Town's Reply to a
Banjo" displays O'Jordan's gift for verse and melody as you sing along to its
soaring chorus. Humor is always near the surface when Jordan in not wielding
puns and jokes outright.
Attractively packaged in individually silk-screened and hand-painted sleeves,
not style is a must-listen and is by far worth your ten or twelve bucks. You
really have no excuse not to buy it. Go!
