Necessity was the mother of JohnnyÆs two solo albums put out under the name
Cezanne. He never intended to do solo records. With the lack of any musician
friends in a small Texas college town he wound up in after getting laid off
work, he had no other choice but to buck it up and get some sounds into the
computer or quit all together.
After recording BBFJ and producing/manufacturing 1000 copies Johnny moved to New
York City in hopes to start a band. A year passed by, still no band. He still
couldnÆt find a place to fit in the NYC scene. So yet again he started off on
his own. He performed solo gracing the stages of Life CafΘ (Brooklyn), The Wreck
Room, Sidewalk CafΘ, The Lucky Cat, CBGBÆs underground, Laila Lounge and The
Bitter End. All the while his stockpile of Cds sat in a closet in the dark
collecting dust. A year later he met Kyle Warren through a friend at a loft
party where Johnny performed solo. Both fans of Sonic Youth they started
jamming. Kyle dug the tunes and eventually agreed to play drums for Cezanne even
though his previous band experience was playing guitar in the Atomatones where
they made some noise in the Santa Cruz, CA scene.
Now a duo the two turned to Craigslist to find a third. After several tryouts
and a couple false starts, Cezanne tried out Dave Burgreen who fit right in.
When the three played for the first time there was a spark of energy they hadnÆt
felt in a long long time.
