│ 2006 has been a banner year for Touane, with releases on Persona, │
│ Dumb Unit and Trenton Records, his first remix appearing on │
│ Barcelona's Regular label, and our favorite moment -- the licensing │
│ of his track "Bassic" from Die Zimmermannlieder for Tiefschwarz's │
│ Fabric 29 mix session. Showing a remarkable range of styles, │
│ Marco's frequently able to twist the archaic instrumentalism of the │
│ cocktails and wife-swapping 70's into something resembling │
│ space-age dance music. We've had enough of retro-futurism thank you │
│ very much. Persona is about future-retroism. But if you're worried │
│ about the 70's reference. keep in mind our bell-bottoms are │
│ corduroy. Suspend your disbelief. It's almost 2007, and techno │
│ music is still maturing in waterlogged basements and coal-burning │
│ flats. Here's where Touane comes in. Wisdom Tooth kicks off the │
│ A-Side of the Prosa EP. Sitting in the dentist's chair with the │
│ nitrous mask strapped to your nose, eyes heavy-lidded and banal │
│ fluorescent lights spinning disco ball patterns on your retina. │
│ This music can be dissociative, and shouldn't be used before │
│ operating heavy machinery unless we're talking a 10,000 Watt │
│ sound-system in the middle of a corn field. Sounds play forwards │
│ and backwards, twisting and melting into different shapes. Digital │
│ scrapes lift the dynamics of the track slowly, like a rollercoaster │
│ that's just about to crest the peak, and the rush you get in the │
│ freefall causes everybody to scream. Previsioni: Man, I hate the │
│ word "jazz." It's got too much history. But how else can we talk │
│ about music that doesn't move in the way you expect? Carl Craig │
│ said a long time ago that this is also techno's raison d'etre. │
│ What's significant about Touane's music is that it lacks the overt │
│ harmonic cues normally heard in dance production. Instead, he puffs │
│ out an oscillating cloud of suspension in which you can lose │
│ yourself. Threads of melody cruise past like a Wurlitzer's stripes. │
│ B-Side is almost. Everybody uses the same elements in a track: │
│ kick, snare, and bassline. But only a skilled few can combine these │
│ ingredients in such a way that to hear a track is to hear the │
│ artist behind. Poesia and Prosa are two sides of the same coin. │
│ Born from the same session they represent the yin and yang of │
│ harmony and rhythm, or poetry and prose. Using the same sounds and │
│ samples, our hero showcases his mastery of dynamics by flipping the │
│ elements. In the first part, the main theme is built from the │
│ reversed guitar, and this sweet melody marks a more contemplative │
│ and poetic tone. The second movement starts out on the bassline, │
│ and builds up from the original but gates the dynamics, and │
│ digitally filters the organic tones of the original into more │
│ synthetic sounds. Perhaps flying across the no man's land between │
│ the hills of smooth into the white-capped mountains of funk. │
