release notes/summary (backcover information)
Albert Einstein was one of the principal founders
of the quantum and relativity theories. Until 1925,
when the BoseûEinstein statistics was discovered,
he made great contributions to the foundations of
quantum theory. However, after the discovery of
quantum mechanics by Heisenberg and wave mechanics
by Schr÷dinger, with the consequent development of
the principles of uncertainty and complementarity,
it would seem that Einstein's views completely
changed. In his theory of the Brownian motion,
Einstein had invoked the theory of probability to
establish the reality of atoms and molecules; but,
in 1916û17, when he wished to predict the exact
instant when an atom would radiate ù and developed
his theory of the A and B coefficients ù he wondered
whether the "quantum absorption and emission of light
could ever be understood in the sense of the complete
causality requirement, or would a statistical residue
remain? I must admit that there I lack the courage of
my convictions. But I would be very unhappy to renounce
complete causality", as he wrote to his friend Max Born.
However, he wrote later to Born that quantum mechanics
"is certainly imposing", but "an inner voice tells me
that it is not the real thing ... It does not bring us
closer to the secret of the 'Old One'. I, at any rate,
am convinced that He is not playing at dice". At the 1927
and 1930 Solvay Conferences on Physics in Brussels,
Einstein engaged in profound discussions with Niels Bohr
and others about his conviction regarding classical
determinism versus the statistical causality of quantum
mechanics. To the end of his life he retained his belief
in a deterministic philosophy. This highly interesting book
explores Einstein's views on the nature and structure of
physics and reality.

We've heard a lot of static on the lines about the
PNGs.
The bottom line is: if you don't like the format,
and don't want to convert the PNGS yourself to the
format that best suits your particular fetish, go buy
the book and STFU.
And yes, we have explored the various conversion
utilities out there (such as the ones that convert
images to PDF), and have determined that the final
presentation is sub par in quality. However, if YOU
like the outcome, by all means go and convert it
yourself! No one's stopping you. We have already
explained why the bulk of our material will be
released as PNGs, and canning them into a PDF isn't
something we're interested in doing (think for a
moment, what if someone wants to OCR the books,
they'd then have to get yet another utility to
convert BACK to images from the PDF, and round
and round it goes).
Why the PNGs?
The process by which a treeware tome is transformed
into a digital reincarnation of its former self is
an arduous and perilous one. The deceptively
simplistic four-step skeletal structure of said
process is as follows:
i. scan book
ii. OCR book
iii. proofread book
iv. format book
Despite the prevalence of the mistaken belief that
the first step--the scanning--is the most time
consuming process, a standard 200-page volume can
easily be scanned in under an hour at the standard
acceptable settings of 300dpi, grayscale.
No, the fun starts after the book has been OCRed
(whereupon the image of the text becomes transformed
into actual ASCII/Unicode characters). OCR engines
being the error prone little bastards that they are,
the existence of errors following the OCR process in
the text is all too commonplace.
Thus, the text must be carefully proofread not only to
remove misspelled words (and to double-check to make sure
they weren't intentionally misspelled in the treeware
edition), but must also remove the occasional artifacts
that were not but dust on the page and yet were
considered to be valid characters by the OCR engine, and
other such nuisances.
Throughout this process, one must have the original
pages (either the original treeware or the scanned
images) on hand for quick reference to make sure that
one has remained faithful to the treeware copy, our
de facto critical edition, such as there is.
The proofreading process thus takes significantly longer
than the actual scanning, not to mention that it is often
best to have more than one person proof the book for
increased accuracy.
Thus, we will now be releasing a large portion of our library
in the form of high-quality PNG images.
You are free to OCR/proofread them yourselves, and then
redistribute them amongst friends and loved ones.
Or, if you just want an easy way to view the PNGs, simply
load them into an image viewer that allows for zoom-lock,
such as ACDSee.
