She is known as THE voice of the german southwest and a respected
performance-artist - and she is a true phenomenon. From the late 80s,
when she had her breakthrough with her band "Sanfte Liebe" (Winner of
the German Rock-award 1989 and the WDR-Studioaward 1990) she made her
way not only as an excellent musician - live, at the studio, or in
film- or stage-productions - always surprising wtith highly
interesting bands and projects ranging from weird but smooth pop to
exquisite chansons ß la Lahr or in the tradition of Weill. From
rockabilly and bluegrass to cool-melting blues and triphop. Always
heading for new horizons, Barbara Lahr can't be pigeon-holed.
Her fascinating versatility is represented by her great number of
different releases like the celebrated album "New Flowers" with her
former band "Sanfte Liebe" or the soundtrack for the movie "Raven
Black Magic Rock" together with the Black Theater Prague. She also
participated in the De-Phazz Album "Detunized Gravity" (produced by
Pit Baumgartner) and the first single "Good Boy" has become a true
insider-tip.
Barbara Lahr`s solo-album (co-produced by Pit Baumgartner) is a
groovy and unusal mix of the most varying elements: by using a
sampler, guitar and her fascinating voice - sometimes in a husky
masculine, sometimes in soft and seductive way - she creates her very
own style. she wiggles her way somewhere in between bittersweet pop,
blues, jazz and funky dub crossing with trippy drum n' bass rhythms
and colourful root-elements. It is exactly this style of music, that
(even now?) can't be described with one word nor with one-thousand.
Every song on this album could be described as a piece of a puzzle.
If you manage to put it together you'll get a picture showing all of
the music of the last fifty years as one scene.
You see, there's no room for boredom and the lyrical texts carried by
this music are worth a closer listening.
But Barbara Lahr is not to be missed live - not only because of the
use of finest audiovisual equipment but also for the impressive and
highly professional stageskills that made her the german trip-hop
diva.
