│ Second releases provoke new, more complex questions then debuts │
│ when the paper was white and the notes sounded inempty space. That │
│ is what happens when talking about the Austrian Kilo, who at the │
│ beginning of the height of Folktronicain 2004 released their debut │
│ "Augarten". As much as their music was located in the center of │
│ this newly proclaimed Genre it also insited on saying "We're │
│ different". But how so? Let's try to be methodical. Kilo produce │
│ electronic music which dealswith patterns specific to the genre, │
│ which examines them to finally deconstruct them resulting in an │
│ organic sound, not tobeing categorized any more. │
│ │
│ This does sound like a platitude especially when things are stuck │
│ but it is also the description of one of the finest moments in Art: │
│ Realizing the conclusion lives and is breathing the impact which │
│ resides deep within. And not loosing the picture of the Augarten │
│ (the debut was labeled with the name of this Park in Vienna) giving │
│ us fresh new air to breath and think, to absorb and push through │
│ our lungs. Compared to Augarten, the Music on the new and self │
│ titled CD from Kilo is much more fragile and complex. Aside from │
│ the Guitars, the clicks and the cuts we have new Elements in Sound, │
│ equal to the known ones. │
│ │
│ But Florian Bogner and Markus Urban (who are Kilo) do not use these │
│ elements for the purpose itself, an Hollywood-like showing your │
│ muscles on Venicebeach but to create musical intensity through │
│ denseness. And in a way is only ironic to do this not in a │
│ arbitrary surrounding of electronic Music but within Minimal. │
│ Ironic, as this blueprint which they love and adore and which lives │
│ from being purified is even more deconstructed and transformed (or │
│ call it disposed) into a concept of sound which is dense in a sense │
│ of Robert Wyatt or Kai Althoff's Workshop. Or dense as the New York │
│ No-Wave Sound of the late 70's at the gateway between Brian Eno and │
│ DNA. │
│ │
│ To sum it up we name the inspiration for this process: Techno, │
│ House, Freejazz, Rock, Ambient and Tape-music. The pieces where │
│ build out of improvisation as well as out of the following │
│ post-production process. Speaking of production: Urban and Bogner │
│ usually work with artifacts of free improvisation, be it precise │
│ sound material or footage which are reminiscences to concerts for │
│ example. All this tiny little pieces where put into new connections │
│ or handed over to invitedguest musicians for modification. Finally │
│ Kilo invited musicians (Double Bass, trumpet, horns) from the │
│ Klangforum Wien forguest appearances. The combination of all this │
│ can be heard on KILO. │
