│ Ty comes back with the first full release single from his new │
│ album of the same name. "Closer" the track is both a personal │
│ and a political ode to the virtues of struggle û of keeping │
│ going, of continuing to make the effort, of striving. But in │
│ the hands of this master of words and moods, rather than │
│ sounding dry, or worthy or even depressing, the message is │
│ about as uplifting as you can get. Joined by De La Soul's Maceo │
│ on chorus duty, with a soulful, stirring beat that wouldnÆt │
│ sound out of place bumping from Kanye's MPC, this is music to │
│ party to. Militantly. │

│ On the flip, London re-rub masters Blackbeard focus on the more │
│ melancholy end of the music spectrum, offsetting the feistiness │
│ of Ty's words with a sparse rhythmic frame and electric piano │
│ washes. And, of course, thereÆs the usual tempting │
│ instrumentals and acapella to round out the package. │
│ │
│ "Closer," the album from which the single is drawn, shows the │
│ Mercury-nominee continuing to expand and deepen his art. Funny, │
│ clever, thoughtful, angry and hard-hitting by turns, it's a │
│ modern day classic. │
