Jackie O Motherfucker are an extensive collective made up of
more musicians than I have time to list, but are held together
by the unifying thread of spaced-out droning pyschedelia, and
if that doesnÆt whet youÆre appetite I donÆt know what will.
Bands like this come into their own when playing live,
capturing a spirit that never seems to translate to studio
recordings, and although æFlags of the Sacred HarpÆ was a
triumphant venture into peculiar songwriting and production,
their live shows shed light on a totally different aspect of
their sound. WhatÆs interesting is how the collective changes
from show to show, taking in extra members like a snowball
rolling down a mountain, and of course this totally changes
the dynamic and overall sound of each show. The album kicks
off with a restrained piece recorded in the confines of WFMUÆs
radio studio û with help from Samara Lubelski and Theo Angell
among others the band layer sparkling ritualistic drones,
angular post-SY guitar tickling and rumbling percussion to
create a totally mesmerizing 26 minute trip guaranteed to get
psych fans salivating. Straight after this weÆre treated to
another restrained segment from the band; recorded live in
France this 20 minute exploration is far more harmonic and
drifting in its beauty, exploring the bandÆs more mellow
melancholic side. The second disc is where the real winners
reside though, with two live recordings showing that the band
can rock with jams resembling Sunburned Hand of the Man at
their best. This is the sort of music thatÆs literally crying
out for you to crank up at home, bust out a lunchbox of
controlled substances and take steps into another world.

     -----

The line-up includes Montreal musicians Fluffy Erskine and
David Bryant, as well as long time JOMF members T. Greenwood
and Brooke Crouser. Also appearing in these recordings are
Jeff Mooridian, Adam Forkner, Honey Owens, Jessie Carrot, Theo
Angell, Samara Lubelski, Josh Stevenson, Genevieve Delinger,
Alexander Tucker and Andy Cvar, with live sound by Craig
     Bowen.

The four compositions contained here, issued for the first
time ever by Very Friendly, are all quite long, even by JOMF
standards, the shortest piece being over 19 minutes long.
Listening to this work requires some patience, but is richly
rewarding, as each piece unfolds and delivers it's content in
a way completely unique, and timeless. Raw blues, layered
drones, and hypnotic percussion combine with pulsing
micro-tones, turntable live/samples, bells, whispers, and jive
talk, to create a poetic, trance-psych classic.
