I'm sure many of you will remember the wonderful RG Morrison
album 'Learning about Loathing' from earlier this year - that
was the first we had heard of Devon's Drift Collective and it
was a beautiful insight into the label's mindset - beautifully
tactile handmade packaging bundling up music to fall in love
to, the subtle sounds of pastoral English folk, with a little
bit of modernity dropped in for good measure. Well now we're
on the second release and the design aesthetic is still all
present and correct; handmade thick brown paper packets, wax
sealed for extra personality and charming inked artwork. In
case you were wondering, 'Thirty Pounds of Bone' is the
pitch-black pseudonym of RG Morrison and his associate Johnny
Lamb, and although the name might suggest some kind of gloomy
Nordic pagan hatred, the pair actually manage to drum up some
bloody lovely folk sounds, just the kind we like over this end
of town. It's surprisingly upbeat, and definitely more so than
RG Morrison's rather lonely debut, with a kind of
country-leaning atmosphere lending itself to a jaunty pub
singalong, real ale in hand. The album opens in typically
rowdy fashion with 'When she Goes Up' which shows the band at
their best, banjos in hand and get the album off to a powerful
start. However it's surprisingly the quieter moments the
really hit home - 'Uyeasound' is particularly wistful and
conjures up images of the Devonshire hills marvellously.
Another fantastic addition to the Drift canon, all that's
missing is some clotted cream and a scone. (How are we
supposed to pronounce that again?) - boomkat
