transmissions from Mars, directed by George Butler, presented by
Lockheed Martin. Philip Glass returns to roots, offers symphonic
music that shimmers, dazzles, drones. Furtive, arpeggio-ish
figures play throughout. Glass avoids dissonance or
complication, keeps harmonic language rooted in major. Score is
repetitious to be sure but by no means pure minimalist. Within
accessible palette, composer delivers rich, vibrant ideas,
trumpet triads, solid bass line, more. CD wraps in non-sequiter
manner with "Glosoli" performed by Sigur Ros. Michael Riesman
conducts.
