The Chicago four-piece Unfortunaut successfully blends minimalism and
instrumental doom-metal on "Of Here & Now," the band's new three-song EP, three
songs that, together, still clock in at twenty-five minutes. More Pelican than
Russian Circles, Unfortunaut relies on heavy, pounding drums and grave, brooding
guitars that, elementally, disturb and fascinate with overwhelming force. While
other bands may feel the need to overdub that hell out of a three-song release,
making it impossible to recreate effectively on stage, Unfortunaut holds back
and creates an EP that's heavy as thunder at times, and as quiet as drizzle at
others. It's tireless and unboundedly impressive, and certainly work in which
vocals would only subtract from its essence and power. And on "Ursa," the EP's
closer, the band transitions from making incessant feedback gorgeous to making
you scared of the dark.
