The International Broadcasting Convention, more commonly
known by its acronym IBC, is an annual trade show for
broadcasters, content creators/providers, equipment
manufacturers, professional and technical associations,
and other participants in the broadcast industry. IBC
is Europe's largest professional broadcast show. The
show is held annually in September at the RAI
Exhibition and Congress Centre in Amsterdam, The
Netherlands.

Multimedia on the Move
The convergence of broadcast and telecoms
platforms is bringing a variety of new service
offerings to mobile terminals. This session
answers a number of outstanding questions about
receiving such multimedia on the move.
For content, the question is how data volume
can be reduced so it does not swamp the
handset receivers but can still show all
important visual information. For network
encapsulation and multiplexing issues, the
transmission efficiency of new platform
proposals is analysed. For spectrum
considerations, the session looks at new
platforms providing multicast services in unused
3G TD and DAB spectrum slots.
Finally, the subject of service Protocols and
Layers is addressed. Wireless-centric transport
layer protocols and software-based platforms can
simplify network operations and give the user a
link between the mobile receiver and home
equipment such as PVR's.

The IBC Conference is traditionally themed to
offer in-depth focus on the top issues. The
themes for 2006 included Multimedia in the
Networked Home, HDTV Lift-Off, Media on the
Move, Content Production, IPTV and D-Cinema.
The IBC Conference concurrently runs sessions
covering a wide range of hot topics outside the
coverage of the themes. In addition there is
also a range of business and commercial sessions.
While the conference theme days are as applicable
to commercial and managerial staff as they are to
creative and technical people, that is not the end
of the business analysis at IBC. There is also a
series of sessions aimed at helping develop the
commercial strategies of the future, helping
operators find a way to use technological
developments to build strong revenue streams.
The programme for IBC2006 started with the thorny
subject of digital rights management: how audiences
can enjoy content across a range of devices while
delivering a fair return on the intellectual
property. Is the solution ever more stringent DRM,
or is there merit in the "creative commons"
approach?
Another important debating point was the future for
skills development. How can broadcasters, producers,
operators and manufacturers implement appropriate
training and personal development programmes in
today's world of desktop creation.
Also on the business agenda were panels to discuss
radio, archives, and that old favourite will the PVR
mean audiences never again watch a commercial?
Maintaining revenues in an on-demand age is going to be
one of the toughest challenges of all.
