Flaherty has been on the receiving end of much high praise in
recent times, largely due to his series of duo recordings with
free musicÆs leading improv drummer, Chris Corsano, and as
part of Dream/Aktion Unit with Thurston Moore and Jim
OÆRourke. Here, Flaherty is stripped of any back-up, instead
delivering eight incendiary solo pieces for alto and tenor
saxophone. Demonstrating absolute virtuosity throughout,
Flaherty condenses his 20 years of improvised recording
experience into this album. His dynamic range is astonishing,
with some pieces being utterly frenzied, as demonstrated by
the immaculate, ruptured flows of æShattered Scenes Of
Blinding BurstÆ and others exhibiting comparative restraint,
as found in the pensive, languid intervals of æBlankets Wear
The Naked FearÆ. A real highlight here is æMonsters Hide In
Plain Sight DarkÆ, in which Flaherty at one point breaks from
his instrument to deliver shrieks and roars, which fit so well
alongside the animalistic sax performance. Awesome.
