Ok, so To Rococo Rot's "Mit Dir In Der Gegend" track has long beenRnotes
a personal obsession of mine, what with it being quite possibly one
of my all-time most-listened to pieces of music and amongst the
finest examples of instrumental bliss ever written.
Honestly it's just sublime, a sort of post-rock template, beautifully
underplayed strings that sound like vintage Detroit techno distilled
and separated from context, a gently pulsating Casio rhythm
section, heavenly chords - it just has everything.
Anyway, this amazing collection of To Rococo Rot rarities
(all tracks previously available on vinyl only) starts off with
the alternate version to this amazing track, originally found on
the classic "Paris 25" EP for the City Slang label back in 1997
and quite different from the more familiar version on the
seminal Veiculo album.
This alone would justify the asking price as far as I'm concerned,
but fact is that each and every one of the 12 tracks here is utterly
indispensable, ranging from the gently arpegiated electro-acoustic
minimalism of "Schon Sehr Viel Telefoniert" to the popish bliss
of the classic "Telema" and the effervescent fuzz of "Days
Between Stations" For a band who have always seemed to
function better writing material for singles, this collection pretty
much stands out as the finest long-playing release in an
always-captivating career and as such comes to you with an
unreserved, passionate recommendation.
