the latest offering from JapanÆs Kama Aina, a
whimsical folk-pop feller called Takuji Aoyagi who
along with Maher Shalal Hash Baz (try pronouncing
that with a mouthful of mashed potato) and the
Tenniscoats has emerged as a leading light of the
Japanese scene.
He released an album on the Pastels curated
Geographic label a while back, so itÆs no surprise
to see the best Glasgow has to offer popping up
on this record too û weÆve got Isobel Campbell,
Bill Wells and of course Stephen Pastel himself
making appearances and adding to the tightly
woven tapestry of Kama Aina. ItÆs all delicate,
gorgeous stuff û imagine if the Moteer family produced
a Mum record and youÆll have some idea of the direction
weÆre going here; delicate electronic production
combined with the most lovely instrumental flourishes
this side of the enchanted waterfall.
Flick over to æWedding SongÆ for a perfect example û
tearjerking organ progressions are embellished with
a high pitched ethnic string instrument and some
simple clattering percussion. Well IÆm just about ready
to curl up and hibernate, I donÆt know about you û IÆve
got my acorns ready, and this disc is about all else I
need to take me into a deep, warm and contented state
of total relaxation. I think itÆs the resounding smile you
get from listening that makes me you like this, thereÆs
no malice or bad feeling, simply honesty and affection,
and sometimes thatÆs all you need.
