Black Box presents a recording of two seminal works by Steve
Reich, one of the most influential composers of the 20th &
21st centuries, and a world premiere recording of a piece by
     his protoge, Marc Mellits

Without a doubt one of the most important composers of the
previous and current centuries, Steve Reich has had an
enormous influence on modern music of many genres. This album
is released to tie in with his 70th birthday celebrations this
Autumn, which include a high-profile series of concerts at
     LondonÆs Barbican Centre

Piano Phase, one of ReichÆs earlier works, experiments with
two pianists playing repetitive loops, which gradually phase
in and out of time with each other, creating a mesmerising
     effect

Different Trains, considered one of the most significant works
of the past century, is based on ReichÆs experiences of train
journeys as a child during the late 30s and early 40s in
America, and his thoughts about the kind of trains he might
have been on, as a Jew, had he resided in Europe during that
time. It uses pre-recorded speech samples, train sounds and
music as a backing track which is then performed over,
creating what has become known as a musical documentary

The Duke Quartet has championed the works of Reich and other
contemporary composers, and, for the first time since the
Kronos Quartet first recorded Different Trains in 1990, has
recorded a new backing track. American pianist Andrew Russo is
a dynamic young rising star, already very well-respected in
contemporary music circles, and has recorded works by many of
the great American composers for Black Box. Joining Andrew on
Piano Phase is composer & pianist Marc Mellits, who was a
student of ReichÆs and is considered a great talent in the
younger generation of composers. Also featured here is the
world premiere recording of one of his most recent works û
     String Quartet No.2
