│release notes.
William Kurk is originally from Chicago, IL, born and raised on the
south side of the city. The early childhood years were spent in the
Bridgeport neighborhood, and later to be developed in South Shore.
Before this journey for William Kurk took place, the lineage of his
musical roots must be recognized. Lena Mclin, the grandmother, is a
highly accomplished and noted composer/teacher/arranger/pianist,
with thousands of published works. His mother is also noted for her
songwriting/singing, and is a talented bassist as well. The late
William, Sr. was a prestigious drummer in the pop/jazz/blues
circles, and was an original member of the Weapons of Peace
R&B/Rock band. The great Thomas A. Dorsey is the great uncle of the
musical family tree, who is the father of gospel music (ôPrecious
Lordö and ôPeace in the Valleyö are just two of the many famous
works). Nathaniel Mclin, jr. is the uncle who is not only a
talented singer, but an art critic of the radio show CriticÆs
Corner which can be heard Saturday mornings on WKKC in Chicago.
Marcel Gill is the older brother, who once had his recognition for
his Michael Jackson impersonations at the Kenwood High School
Talent Shows during his youth.
Music for William Kurk started as early as nine months
of age when he was a drummer before knowing how to walk. The next
experience would come later in life when Kurk studied flute at the
Merit School of Music at the age of 8. Because of the situation at
home with the grandmother having many instruments around and
various recordings of different types of music, this would
eventually become a journey in self-discovery for Kurk. Listening
to popular music was unavoidable, but receiving an early
appreciation for classical, choral, jazz, and blues through the
influences of his grandmother and father lead to a greater musical
side that didnÆt emerge until a few years later. The seed was
planted, so it had to grow at itÆs own pace.
After dabbling with the guitar, bass, and studying
trumpet between the ages of 11-13, none of the instruments had a
place for William Kurk. The frugal discipline could be the cause,
but the desire has to meet halfway in order for it to take flight.
Singing had become a full-time study under his grandmotherÆs
guidance by the age of 14, and this would continue all throughout
the high school years. While in high school, Kurk wanted to
manifest the ideas that he developed over time, and the only
instrument that seemed logical was the piano. Although Kurk never
studied the piano formally before this time, and only carried
previous knowledge from other instruments, he was determined to
make his music come to life. After self-studying and observation at
the age of 16, he was good enough to play a few tunes behind the
Promontory Point Big Band, which was directed by Ken Chaney. By
coincidence, Kurk was going to the Promontory Point Park District
to practice dancing, and on a day of no practice, this is how he
met Ken Chaney. The first of many mentors in his journey as a
working musician was Ken, and this is how Kurk knew that he had a
chance of being a pianist.
From the beginning of his high school education until
the end, William Kurk was singing at all the prayer mass services,
and even accompanying himself on piano and singing upon occasion
when the music teacher/accompanist was not around. There were
glances of a choir through his time at Hales Franciscan, but he
ultimately was the main guy in his era. After high school, William
Kurk was briefly at Loyola University before being welcomed to
attend Northern Illinois University to study voice. With the
guidance of noted baritone professor Robert Sims, Kurk was learning
more about his skill with his voice. On the other hand, Kurk had a
stronger affection for playing piano and learning about the jazz
tradition of music. He played in a jazz quartet coached by
guitarist Fareed Haque, and was in a jazz vocal ensemble called
jazzvox. He gathered all that he could in his one semester at NIU
before going to Columbia College Chicago, where he was polished
enough as a pianist to be admitted directly into the big band,
combos, and private studies with Thomas Gunther. Even after being
awarded a full scholarship in jazz studies, William Kurk was
branching off into other avenues of performance. Musical theater
was becoming a strong field for Kurk as a pianist, and later an
actor during this time. This would eventually lead to William
KurkÆs position at Black Ensemble Theater in June 2001.
Under the recommendation of Thomas Washington (Tom
Tom), Kurk was working at an established theater in Chicago full
time as both a primary pianist and secondary pianist for select
productions. Besides working with the best musicians, Kurk was also
working with the best on-stage talent, which would make for good
threads into other types of freelance work for Kurk. Writing
charts, arranging songs, production, musical direction, and even
dancing were other talents that allowed Kurk to get more jobs
around the city.
A graduate of the Columbia College Music Composition
Program in June 2005, Will has been able to work and learn
continuously through his contributions and efforts to make music a
part of everyoneÆs lives. William Kurk has traveled with numerous
groups, played for many artists, recorded a great deal of music,
and is still on the rise. The Dells, Seal, David Boykin, Anthony
Nicholson, Malcolm Jamal Warner, The Platters, Marvelettes, and
Coasters are just a small list of those his has worked with. The
Sound: Volume 1 is still a recent recording marking his growth, and
the follow up is not far behind. Will is essential in all
practical music-related situations; all the styles and types of
music apply to KurkÆs ability.
There is more to the story as it unfolds, but this is legacy
unfolding before us, and it is important to be a witness to the
evolution of our culture through our art.
