| As much as I enjoy the mighty Judas Iscariot, I think nearly any devotee |
| can acknowledge a certain bloat in the studio albums. Whether a |
| half-successful homage to genre classics like Burzum or inchoate attempts |
| at something more original and grandiose, a notable minority of the band's |
| songs tend to suffer a bit from overindulgence and repetition. |
| |
| Here, the tides have shifted. |
| |
| Dethroned presents a hellish vision of USBM that has separated the wheat |
| from the chaff in totality. Not a second of this EP is needless or |
| redundant - the introductory guitar doesn't make it a full twenty seconds |
| before bursting into an all-out onslaught of second-wave trem riffs and |
| wrist-destroying blast beats. |
| |
| I don't know that "Descent to the Abyss" is the best track on the EP, but |
| it is certainly the ideal thesis statement for it. The sheer speed of the |
| drumming coupled with the baleful vocal croaks and basement-quality |
| production serves as a preview of what is to come. And indeed, more of |
| this style is heard in follow-up track "Benevolent Whore, Dethroned for |
| Eternity." It is the third track, however, that best demonstrates the |
| updating of Judas Iscariot's established atmospheric sound. "Journey |
| Through Visions of War" uses several simple rhythm guitar vamps as the |
| basis for a track led by vocals and lead guitars; rather than padding time |
| with drawn-out passages of chord progressions, the time is wisely given to |
| hateful lyrics and minor-key lead licks. |

| No matter the song, the riffs on offer here are reminiscent of those |
| favored throughout Darkthrone's untouchable mid-90s output, a style |
| imitated by virtually every black metaller but successfully channeled by |
| only the masterful. Akhenaten has, to be sure, achieved such mastery. His |
| vision of misanthropic nihilism is palpable in every second of Dethroned, |
| bolstered by hoarse and animalistic shrieks. |
| |
| This singularity of focus is clear in the length of the EP - fitting 5 |
| songs into a trim 20 minutes is a feat for an artist whose LPs often |
| include single songs over half that runtime. I do believe that Judas |
| Iscariot's full discography is worth attentive listening, but this short |
| release is the unquestionable pinnacle. |
