Release Notes:
Calexico transplant the ClashÆs hymn to urban strife to the desert and it more
than survives the journey. I sometimes find Calexico a bit too polite but here
the Tex-Mex tones of picky acoustic guitar, wailing trumpet and Spanish vocals
work perfectly in maintaining the edge and the colour. Strummer, IÆm sure, would
have approved. On the other side, BeirutÆs æInterior of a Dutch HouseÆ shows off
Zach CondrenÆs songwriting skills. Far from the Balkans sound of æGulag
OrkestarÆ, this is a weird sort of melodic alt.country, with a big thumping
piano sound and orchestral infills, plus resonant vocals a little like Sufjan
Stevens. ItÆs a grower and shows thereÆs more than one string to his bow (or the
rest of his instruments). This is released in a limited edition of 1000 to tie
into the recent tour.
