dXb Frivolous is a protagonist of the minimal house dXb
dXb scene. That is his reputation. Or rather, that has dXb
dXb been his reputation so far. Now he has transported dXb
dXb this sound to a place where it could become of dXb
dXb interest for a wider audience and transcend the dXb
dXb circle of insiders who up to now were his main dXb
dXb audience. dXb
dXb "Midnight Black Indulgence" marks a watershed in dXb
dXb Frivolous' career. For the first time, influences and dXb
dXb inspirations are clearly discernible. Moments of pure dXb
dXb dance ecstasy are followed by string interludes or dXb
dXb appear next to jazz ballads. The connections dXb
dXb Frivolous makes are of a convincing, almost dXb
dXb compelling logic. This album is everything but dXb
dXb eclectic, Frivolous' extremely personal music is dXb
dXb aimed at special moments and places. And although dXb
dXb these tracks are never pompous or serve as a display dXb
dXb for his musical prowess, there is something risky and dXb
dXb luxurious about them. The dense and emotional thread dXb
dXb which he weaves through the album was developed from dXb
dXb baroque music. dXb
dXb Quote Frivolous: "The Baroque artist longs to enter dXb
dXb into the multiplicity of phenomena, into the flux of dXb
dXb things in their perpetual becoming", as Germain Bazin dXb
dXb observed his compositions are dynamic and open and dXb
dXb tend to expand outside their boundaries; the forms dXb
dXb that go to make them are associated in a single dXb
dXb organic action and cannot be isolated from each dXb

dXb "Electronic Music Composition" was the only subject dXb
dXb which young Daniel Gardner found deeply inspiring dXb
dXb during his school days. Suddenly, he was able to dXb
dXb develop something from the piano lessons which dXb
dXb hitherto had only served to discipline him that was dXb
dXb at once challenging, intensive and enjoyable. During dXb
dXb the mid-nineties, he discovered dance music and soon dXb
dXb began to dj at all the relevant afterhours in dXb
dXb Vancouver. During this time, the city's club scene dXb
dXb tended to be dominated by the more "obliging" dXb
dXb US-house, which had a tendency towards vulgarity; the dXb
dXb new European minimal sound was looked down upon by dXb
dXb the audience as being poncy art music. Thus Daniel dXb
dXb chose the alias Frivolous to smuggle this new sound dXb
dXb into the clubs. dXb
dXb Daniel: "My music started to turn really jazzy and dXb
dXb humorous, and coincidentally the word frivolous in dXb
dXb French means "in-appropriately playful", like for dXb
dXb instance the characteristic of somebody who shows up dXb
dXb at a funeral wearing polka-dots." dXb
dXb At first he was hesitant to release his music. dXb
dXb Contributions to compilations on Canadian labels dXb
dXb gained him an early modest reputation. When he dXb
dXb finally sent demos to five renowned German labels, dXb
dXb three of them wanted to release his music dXb
dXb straightaway. Since 2002, Gardner has released more dXb
dXb than ten EPs. dXb
dXb The advanced minimal sound has bestowed electronic dXb
dXb dance music with a new, sophisticated body. To this dXb
dXb body, Frivolous has given a head - and also a face. dXb
dXb While many contemporary productions lose themselves dXb
dXb in self-absorbed and arbitrary moments, Frivolous dXb
dXb succeeds in transforming youthful charm and abandon dXb
dXb into a music that is neither na∩ve nor superficial. dXb
dXb It seems that today's advanced electronic music has dXb
dXb become stuck because of its attempts at abstraction dXb
dXb and by its formalism. Frivolous comes up with dXb
dXb something we've often been promised but only now come dXb
dXb to hear: He actually generates a feeling for song dXb
dXb from House and Techno. At the same time, his dXb
dXb understanding of melody and voice does not stem from dXb
dXb a threadbare and shopworn view on 80s pop music (as dXb
dXb so often is the case), but from jazz. In his music, dXb
dXb jazz and "jazzyness" do not work as tacky, dXb
dXb transfigured quotations but as snapshots full of dXb
dXb character; impressions of feelings materialized as dXb

dXb Says Daniel: "For me Jazz means a loseness and a dXb
dXb feeling that can only be created by humans. It is the dXb
dXb anti-machine. Even if it is sampled, it is usually dXb
dXb for the quality of a magical moment that can't be dXb
