This high-energy collection is the soundtrack to a Disney Channel original film,
starring High School Musical's Corbin Bleu and
Akeelah and the Bee's Keke Palmer. Jump In! offers a slightly subversive twist
to the follow-your-dreams theme: A promising teen
boxer (Bleu) discovers his latent passion for double-dutch jump-rope and
secretly joins a team; when word gets out, he must
choose between "following his heart and letting what others think determine his
destiny." This companion album -- three songs
featuring the film's leads and ten others by new, little-known artists --
enhances the film's energy with an effervescent
pop/hip-hop/R&B hybrid familiar to any parent regularly exposed to the Disney
Channel or Nickelodeon (where it is ubiquitous in the
commercials and in some shows). The song titles perfectly convey the
enthusiastic, ultra-positive flavor, from "It's On"
and "I'm Ready" to "Live It Up" and "Let It Go" to the three titles featuring
the word "jump" (one of which, Lil' Josh's "Jump," is
a cover of House of Pain's 1993 classic "Jump Around" with new lyrics). The
influence of Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera,
Pink, Rihanna, and boy bands loom large over the album; a couple of ballads and
the occasional Latin or Caribbean tinge add a dash of
spice to the proceedings, and among the lesser-known performers (one suspects
they are Disney superstars-in-waiting), T-Squad's
"Vertical" shows the most personality. Bleu's presence will certainly win Jump
In! an immediate audience -- one that won't be
disappointed and one that's sure to grow with each subsequent rebroadcast of
this engaging show.
